Healing Psoriasis with Essential Oils

Psoriasis presents itself most frequently as a skin disease. But it is actually an autoimmune disorder of both the skin and joints. The skin becomes covered in areas of red, scaly patches. These patches are inflamed and the skin covering them accumulates quickly causing areas of plaques that are silvery white in appearance. There is no cure for psoriasis but there are treatments that work in healing psoriasis and give relief to the sufferer.

The most common areas of psoriasis development are on the skin of the elbows, chest and knees.  But psoriasis can occur anywhere on the body, even the scalp and the genital area.  It is believed that psoriasis was one of the forms of leprosy in the Bible.

Psoriasis is a chronic condition, meaning it reoccurs and varies in severity.  It may be contained to localized patches, or it may cover the entire body.  Psoriasis can also affect the fingernails and toenails and cause inflammation of the joints, which is called psoriasis arthritis.  As many as ten to fifteen percent of persons who are affected by psoriasis will also have psoriasis arthritis.

There appears to be a genetic factor associated with having psoriasis, though other causes are unknown.  Many factors can aggravate psoriasis making healing psoriasis very difficult.  These factors are stress, excessive alcohol consumption and smoking.  Those who suffer from psoriasis can suffer from depression and can have low self esteem because of their condition.  As a result, quality of life becomes a factor when healing psoriasis.

Psoriasis is seen all over the world.  It does not discriminate between race, sex, age or social status.  But psoriasis is usually diagnosed in the early adult years.

Essential oils can help with healing psoriasis.  They have wonderful soothing qualities.  Lavendar, tea tree, rose and chamomile are great essential oils that can relieve the symptoms and discomfort of psoriasis.

Essential oils can be bought and applied while undiluted.  Use two to four drops to the affected area of psoriasis twice a day.  Or put six to ten drops in a teaspoon of skin lotion and apply daily or whenever needed.

An alkaline diet will provide an added benefit to the effectiveness of the essential oils used for healing psoriasis.  Persons with psoriasis usually have a highly acidic pH in the body.  This causes the oils to be less beneficial.  Doing a good cleanse and going on an alkaline diet will boost the benefit derived from essential oils.
