Can I Cure Psoriasis With a Psoriasis Diet?

It is true that there are claims of success in regards to using a diet based treatment for Psoriasis. But very little scientific research is available to approve or disprove the claim. Still, it is beneficial to know what foods will help to alleviate the disease or to aggravate it.

Psoriasis is a chronic, non-contagious skin condition that presents itself as red, patchy skin covered in silvery plaques.  It is believed that two or three percent of the worlds population may suffer from this disease.  That includes 7.5 million Americans.

A Psoriasis diet is only one approach to treating the condition.  But it appears that psoriasis can sometimes be metabolic in nature and weight gain seems to cause flare ups for sufferers.  Many dermatologists now prescribe a Psoriasis Diet to help cleanse the body and as the first step in weight loss.

What To Avoid

In the psoriasis diet, it is suggested that you avoid acidic and gluten producing foods like caffeine, sodas, sugar, white flour and alcohol.  Food items like pasta, beer and cakes and cookies should not be consumed.  These foods have been shown to worsen Psoriasis.

As a general rule of thumb any foods that are difficult to digest should be avoided.  This would include things like butter, red meat and eggs.

What to Eat

Increase your daily intake of water and fiber.  You should consume an amount of water in ounces that is equal to half of your body weight.  Leafy vegetables, carrots, beets and cucumbers are good to eat on a psoriasis diet, as well as lettuce, sprouts and coconut milk.

Supplements

It is essential to supplement your supply of vitamins and minerals as part of your psoriasis diet.  Those who suffer from psoriasis are low in Vitamins B, C and E.  Fish oil has also been used with moderate results to improve psoriasis.

A Psoriasis diet is not a magic cure and one food item alone will not be the final solution.  Your dermatologist will suggest food items for you based on your history and food allergies as well as your overall condition.  A Psoriasis diet does help you to learn how to eat the foods that are good for you and will contribute to your overall well being.
