The Many Types of Psoriasis Treatment

Psoriasis can be hard to live with. Sufferers are anxious to find a psoriasis treatment that works for them. Unfortunately, no single treatment will work for everyone with psoriasis. The kind of psoriasis you have will determine which treatment will be best for you.

Some of the most common forms of psoriasis treatment are topical creams, like Dermasis. These are applied directly to the skin for relief. They work to slow down the excessive cell production that psoriasis victims suffer from. They also reduce inflammation. Other common topical treatments are corticosteroids and coal tar.

Corticosteroids are availableВ  and have anti-inflammatory properties which lessen the redness and swelling of the psoriasis plaques. Corticosteroids can be used with other treatments, but must be used properly to avoid any side effects that the drug can produce. Some steroids are only safe to use for a limited number of days.

Severe outbreaks of psoriasis may be treated with ultraviolet light therapy, or phototherapy. This involves exposing the affected skin to wavelengths of ultraviolet light and it requires medical supervision. Ultraviolet light B is effective as a psoriasis treatment. It is a type of light that is present in natural sunlight and can slow the unusually fast growth that skin cells which are stricken with psoriasis are known for. Ultraviolet light is used for a predetermined amount of time.

There are prescription medications available to those who suffer from moderate or severe cases of psoriasis. These include systemic medications like cyclosporine, accutane, soriatane, methotrexate and sulfasalazine. Drugs made from animal proteins can help block certain immune system cells that can cause psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.

Alternative treatments like acupuncture and herbal remedies have grown in popularity in recent years. It is thought that as much as thirty six percent of adults who suffer from psoriasis use a form of alternative medicine.

Diet is another psoriasis treatment tried by many to help their psoriasis. Such diets as the turkey diet, the low protein diet and the rice diet are all ways of eating that have been utilized by those who suffer from psoriasis, with results being unique to each individual.
